Wow. It's only been a million years since I updated this.
Anyway, I just thought I'd post a couple 3D objects so the girls have something to look at when they're practicing. We've done 3D objects for weeks now, but I can't stress enough the importance of practicing drawing real objects from different angles.
Emphasize the importance of recognizing that these objects as a whole are made up of more basic shapes when you look at them from one angle. We talked about this in class, so the girls shouldn't have too hard a time with this concept.

Face Basics
1. EYES ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HEAD. NOT THE TOP.
2. The bottom of the ear-lobes are on the same level as the bottom of the nose.
3. The top of the ears are on the same level as the edge of the eyebrows.
4. The distance between the eyes is the same as the width of one eye.
Note: Don't draw your necks too skinny.
More tips will be added later, but use these four main ones as you draw your faces.
Some of the parts of the eye we talked about in class were:
1. The eyeball
2. The eyelids
3. Tear ducts
4. The iris
5. The pupil

Art Class Schedule Change
I will be starting school in the evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays toward the end of August. This means that Art Class will need to be rescheduled to another time. I am thinking that Saturdays would be the best time. When are you available? Email, comment, and/or text feedback are welcome.

Color Schemes
Today in class we discussed a couple of fun color schemes! Triadic and Split Complementary! It is important that we are familiar with all of the standard schemes in order to plan our colors effectively.
Homework: Study the color schemes on the webpage linked below. Make sure you know ALL of the color schemes by next week and how to find them on the color wheel.
http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm (just the color schemes on the first page. There are six.)
Due: July 28, 2009
THERE WILL BE A QUIZ IN CLASS NEXT WEEK!!!!
There is no painting or drawing due next week. Please, call with questions.

Complementary Colors!
Now that we know the color wheel pretty well, we can put colors together to portray certain emotions or ideas in our paintings or drawings. It is important to recognize that some colors "go better" with other colors. Or they create visual balance and harmony. The easiest way to do this is to use Complementary Colors. Finding colors that complement each other is very easy to do. All you need is your color wheel! Simply find which color is directly across the wheel from the one you are trying to complement. For example:Purple is complementary to Yellow.
See? It's really easy.
Homework → Due July 21st.
Instructions for the Student:
♦ Using the two sheets of paper provided in class, paint/crayon/colored pencil/marker two complementary masterpieces.
♦ You may also use different shades and tints of your complementary colors. (If you use Green and Red, you are allowed to use a lighter/darker green with lighter/darker Red as well.) Most crayon and marker sets don't come in Monochromatic colors (hues/colors with black or white added), so use the closest thing you have. (For example: If one of your colors is Green, your set may not include a "Light Green" so "Lime Green" or "Yellow Green" would be acceptable.)
♦ You are allowed to draw anything you'd like, just make sure the entire page is filled with color. This is not an abstract assignment. Be creative. It is still possible to draw an outdoor scene with pretty flowers and sunshine using only two colors.
♦ You MAY NOT use the same complementary combination for both pictures.
This is a challenging assignment. Do your best!
Helpful Tips:
♦ When using Crayons or Colored Pencils a variation in pressure can produce lighter or darker colors.
♦ When painting with watercolors, simply add more water to make a color lighter.

Welcome to the Basement Art Class Blog!
Welcome to the blog that I have created for the Basement Art Class. Here is where you will find details on homework, things we are discussing in class, and featured art peices from both girls in the class.
♥Instead of sending the girls home with little slips of paper that are easily lost, I will post assignments that are to be completed at home here with details and suggestions.
♥I will also post mini-lessons so that the girls may review what we discussed in class.
Hopefully this will be a helpful tool and functional in the next week or so.
Thanks for letting the girls come to Art Class!!
